Rhythm Of The Tide

This artwork captures the serene beauty I saw of the estuary at low tide at Fremington Quay, North Devon, UK on a rather grey day.  Even so, as I gazed across the muddy flats and remaining water, I was drawn to the pattern created by the earthy tones of the mud flats contrasting with the greens of the distant headland and pale greyish blue of the sky. 

Although there wasn't much sunshine out, I could detect some reflections which I added as pale highlights to convey the sense of gentle light and reflection of the day. The distant headland and sky are depicted with subtle blue and green hues, adding an atmospheric calming quality to the piece.

The textured richness of the paint for the mud flats, which I applied with a palette knife and granular acrylic medium, creates depth and dimension and contrasts with the smoother, restful, land and sky area.
